I highly recommend Maria Bertagnolli, Nurse Practitioner, at Georgetown Dermatology. While Dr. Kupiec is knowledgeable and thoughtful, Maria is very thorough and explains what she is doing as she performs her examination. She is not rushed and focuses on you, the patient. This is the third time I've seen her and plan to continue every year.

I went in today in severe pain and clear shingles symptoms. The doctor knew from my visible symptoms that I was in pain. She said “I know you’re in pain but people question dermatologists writing pain prescriptions.” She is spineless and unwilling to offer appropriate clinical. Now I am in the Emergency Room waiting room where they immediately gave me something for the pain while I wait to be seen. Total waste of time….

I had a pretty bad interaction with Dr. Kauffman and left the appointment feeling angry and hopeless. She sent me home with a treatment that I already said was tried and failed. However, several months later she called me out of the blue to see if it worked. When I said it didn't, she asked me to come back in for further testing. I was very impressed by that. I guess she was either having a bad day when I saw her or maybe some personality clashing. But who cares, if she can diagnose and treat what no one else has been able to, it will change my life. Just the fact the she is interested in my case makes a huge difference.
Update: She brought me back in, did a biopsy, charged me money, and then had no real answers. And because the day she took the sutures out the issue I was having was a tiny bit better, she said to come back next year if it gets back again. This is something that changes daily. So that was a useless suggestion. When I told her what another derm thought this was, she wouldn't even hear me out. She had never heard of it and wasn't even pronouncing it correctly.

The appointment was okay. However, they do not accept my insurance. I paid out of pocket and they offered to submit the claim on my behalf. This was in May. I called in July to ask about the claim - spent a while on hold. Was told that the person handling was not there just then but that she would call me back.
I called again yesterday — spent 15 minutes on hold. Then the receptionist told that the person handling claims was not there but that she (the receptionist) would find out and call me the next day, ie today, which hasn’t happened (it’s 5:50pm as I write this).
Needless to say, I have no desire or intention to spend even more time on hold. Instead, I am relating my experience to anyone considering this practice . Should someone actually contact me with an apology and information on the status of my claim, I may consider revising my review.

I don’t normally write reviews for doctors, but this place does not deserve the low rating. I had an abnormal mole, and most dermatologists weren’t getting me in for 3 months. Georgetown Dermatology got me in the next day. Maria, the nurse practitioner, was extremely thorough and kind. They took off the mole I was concerned about and another that looked abnormal. I received results in two weeks, and Maria took the time to explain them clearly and answer all my questions. I never felt like I was being rushed off the phone, like I have been with other doctors. I highly recommend and will keep going here for my checkups! They also took many Covid precautions, and I felt safe going amidst the pandemic.
